The stage at the House of Beautiful Business Polyopportunity Retreat this month.
"Uncertainty is wisdom in motion," said Maggie Jackson during her talk at the House of Beautiful Business retreat this month.
There's a skill in learning how to be with uncertainty. "Skillfully uncertain," she said, captivating the room. There seemed to be a deep need for that reassurance. I felt it. It was like someone giving me a tender hug, whispering: "Don't worry. It's going to be OK — in fact, it's going to be GREAT. You just don't know it yet."
I often speak with my clients about expanding one's vessel in order to hold more. That can look like many things: more uncertainty, more money, more clients, more engagement.
Business in the modern world feels different from the past because we face more than those before us ever did. But do you know what you need in order to be with the more? The bigness? The noise? The information? The options? The uncertainty?
When I first left corporate, I felt overwhelmed, frozen and scared, but I didn’t know what to do with these feelings. It was uncertain, I didn’t know if it would work out and I didn’t know the path to get there.
What I’ve learned is that new feelings and uncertainty are invitations to go deeper. As I peeled back the layers and worked through growth, change, and uncertainty, I discovered new tools and skills that are foundational to my practice today.
In business, our ability to regulate, reorient and take action are the foundations of early growth and success.
"My job is to look at the step in front of me, take that, and then look at the next step, and then the next step," said a friend as he shared what life looks like now that he's sold his company and building his next business.
When you're creating something new—something no one has ever built before—it can feel lonely. Not because you're doing it wrong, but because there has never been a you before, creating this particular thing. If you want to build something unique and deeply personal, there's no template to follow because you're creating the path in real time as you live and breathe in the world.
What makes the journey exciting is how you approach the "not knowing"—what meaning you give to uncertainty. My invitation to you is to embrace it and be with that unknown.
When we feel these edges in our work, this is in fact the signal for expansion. Building a business requires a deep devotion to our purpose and what we know we're here to create and how we're here to serve.
What if we reframed uncertainty as the most fertile soil for growth and transformation?
This month I'm inviting my clients to sit with the idea of being skillfully uncertain.
In moments of uncertainty, I offer you these questions—as invitations to reflect, hold space, and gently tend to fears that may arise.
